Tips to Manage Curly Hair

Since I was little I have always wanted curly hair. Curly hair, though, is more difficult to maintain than naturally straight hair. While those ringlets can look gorgeous most of the time, there are days when the frizz makes the curls become a nightmare to be dealt with.

The uncontrollable twists often frustrate all of my curly-haired friends. Over the years they have learned some tips to manage their naturally curly hair. They shared them with me and I am going to share some of the basics with you.

1. Begin With Shampooing Right

Shampooing daily is a no-no because it strips your scalp of its natural oils and also makes your hair dry and frizzy. Too much of anything is harsh, shampoo is a chemical so you have to not overuse it.

You can wash your hair daily if you need to, just don’t shampoo it daily, though you can use conditioner every day because you won’t be applying it on your scalp, just your hair.

2. Don’t Forget to Condition

Our goal is to stop the curls from frizzing and getting dried out which is one of the top reasons for bad hair days. Conditioning your hair right is an important step to stop that from happening – it helps your curls stay hydrated and healthy.

Curly hair is naturally dry, so skipping on conditioner is not a privilege you can afford. Try using formulas designed for dry/damaged hair.

3. Don’t Rub Dry Completely

After you wash your hair, it can be tempting to rub your hair dry completely with your towel because wet hair is uncomfortable. While heat is harmful for your hair so using blowdryer everyday is not a good idea, aggressively rubbing your hair with a towel to sry it isn’t either.

Gently pat dry your hair with your towel. This will help eliminate frizz and knots that are the biggest enemies of curly hair.

4. Switch Your Brush With a Comb

Brushing your hair can break your hair and damage it with all the pulling. If you have curly hair that knots very easily, it is a smart idea to opt for a wide-tooth comb. For even better results on curly hair, comb your hair while it is slightly wet so that the comb will slide through without getting stuck.

Do not comb when it is completely dripping wet either, because it will pull on the scalp. Combing your hair before it dries will ensure it is knot-free and retains the bounce of the curls. Combing while your hair is dry is painful as it tugs on the curls and will also remove the curl shape and award you with unwanted frizz.

5. Switch to Satin Pillows

Satin bedding and pillowcases are what dreams are made of for many. Along with making you feel royal, it will also help keep your hair curls looking good. Satin will help eliminate frizz overnight and is also gentle on your hair even with all the tossing and turning you do in your sleep.
